·        State likely to miss immunisation target due to ANM shortage

ð  Rajasthan may fall short of achieving the 90% full immunisation coverage (FIC) target by this month because of shortage of auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMS) who act as vaccinators.

ð  The ministry of health and family welfare had planned to achieve 90% immunisation by 2020, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi advanced the deadline to the end of December this year.

ð  India’s universal immunisation programme (UIP) is the largest in the world, catering to an annual birth cohort of 2.6 crore infants and 3 crore pregnant women through around 90 lakh sessions. Over the years, immunisation coverage among children, aged 12-23 months, has increased at a slow pace of around 1% each year from 35% in 1992-93 to 62% in 2015-16.

Rajasthan contributes to more than 6.7% (17.86 lakh) of India’s annual birth cohort. According to the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16), FIC in the state among children of 12-23 months was 54.8%, compared to the national average of 62%.
