Punjab moots online home delivery of booze, with trial in Mohali

Booze lovers in the state will get their favourite brand of liquor delivered at their door step. If this happens, Punjab will perhaps be the first state in the country to have online home delivery of liquor.

Maharashtra had also proposed to start online home delivery of liquor in October 2018 to prevent drink driving, but the move fell through. Even Karnataka had toyed with the idea.

In the new excise policy 2020-21 announced, the government has floated the proposal of introducing a platform for online home delivery in Mohali city on a trial basis. However, it has clarified that the plan will be executed in consultation with all retail licensees of the city and may be dropped if any objection is received.

Through the new policy, the government aims to generate revenue of Rs 6,250 crore against anticipated collection of Rs 5,676 crore of 2019-20. The excise revenue is expected to go up to Rs 5,676 crore in 2019-20 from Rs 5,150 crore in 2018-19.
