Over 50% addicts out of treatment cover in Punjab

Even as Punjab has witnessed steady increase in number of people affected by substance use disorders undergoing treatment, over 50% of patients are still out of coverage of treatment.

Though experts are satisfied with progress made in last two years, they assert that the real challenge lies ahead, that is, to reach out to remaining patients and ensuring minimum treatment dropout rate.

Punjab is home to an estimated 7,20,000 persons suffering from substance abuse, of which only 3,21,758 lakh are undergoing treatment at 191 government outpatient opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) clinics and 100 private centres — registered between July 26, 2017 to November 11, 2019.

According to official data, of the total 3.21 lakh, 1,08,749 patients are registered with government clinics and 2,13,009 with private centres. Majority of substance abuse patients undergoing treatment at different de-addiction centres were on opioids like heroin.

To overcome the challenge of reaching out to patients out of treatment coverage, the experts have called for improving availability of treatment by increasing the number of centres. At present, there are 291 centres, both private and government, the number of which should be about 500 and these should be evenly located across the state.

Buprenorphine is considered to be the most effective treatment, but there are other options available for treating substance abuse patients.
