Punjab fatality rate higher than 4 worst-hit states

Even as mortality rate due to Covid-19 is dropping in five worst-hit states, which account for about 70% of the total national death toll, Punjab finds itself in a tight spot as deaths caused by the pandemic continue to increase in the state.

The fatality rate of 2.93% of Punjab is higher than four states — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh — and is at par with Maharashtra. Among these states, Andhra Pradesh has the lowest rate of 0.88% followed by Uttar Pradesh where 1.46% of people infected with the virus have died. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have a fatality rate of 1.61% and 1.68%, respectively.

The Centre also asked the states to ensure a minimum of 140 tests per million per day and bring down the positivity rate below 5% according to norms of the World Health Organisation.

Armenia, Azerbaijan clashes disturb peace in South Caucasus

Clashes erupted between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the volatile Nagorno-Karabakh region, reigniting concern about instability in the South Caucasus, a corridor for pipelines transporting oil and gas to world markets.

Both sides, which fought a war in the 1990s, reported fatalities.

Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, a breakaway region that is inside Azerbaijan but is run by ethnic Armenians, declared martial law and mobilised their male populations.

Armenia said Azerbaijan had carried out an air and artillery attack on Nagorno-Karabakh.

The clashes prompted a flurry of diplomacy to prevent a new flare-up of a decades-old conflict between majority Christian Armenia and mainly Muslim Azerbaijan, with Russia calling for an immediate ceasefire and Pope Francis leading calls for talks.
