Punjab: Language and Dialect

 

Punjabi is the major language of the Punjab. Hindi and English is alsobeing  spoken in the state. Punjabi is a language which belongs to Indo-Aryan group of languages.

Best on the dialects Punjab can be divided into two regions.

Now, we will discuss some of the most spoken dialects of  Punjab state of India.

Western Punjabi dialects are mostly spoken in the Punjab state of Pakistan.

Majhi : It is standard of written Punjabi. It is spoken mainly in Amritsar, Gurdaspurdiscrict of Punjab.

Malwi: It is spoken in Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Bhatinda. It also includes the Punjabi speaking northern areas of Haryana, viz. Ambala, Hissar, Sirsa, Kurukshetra etc.

Doabi: It is being spoken in Jalandhar and Kapurthala district. In the Doab region of Beas and Satluj this dialect is prevalent.

Pwadhi :The part lying south, south-east and east of Rupnagar adjacent to Ambala District (Haryana) is Pwadhi. Pwadhi is a region of Punjab and parts of Haryana between the Satluj and Ghaggar rivers..
