IIT Ropar conducts study to minimise losses due to floods
To minimise losses due to floods, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, has carried out mapping of some districts in Punjab that witnessed huge losses due to floods in August 2019. The researchers have carried out the study by using the microwave remote sensing (MRS) technique through Sentinel-1 satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA).
The data for the mapping of the districts, especially Ropar, were collected from the ESA. The researchers have come up with some precautionary measures that can counter these losses. In August last year, Punjab witnessed floods in Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ropar, Fazilka, Moga and Ludhiana districts following excess water released from the Bhakra Dam on the Satluj. The Punjab government had demanded over Rs 1,200 crore from the Union government.
