  • State govt plans to introduce MP’S price difference scheme

  • Rajasthan government may introduce the Madhya Pradesh ‘price difference’ model in the state for providing relief to garlic farmers, who have not been able to sell garlic at government purchase rates so far.

  • Under the scheme, farmers in Madhya Pradesh are compensated when notified crops are sold at less than the MSP, but the payout is capped at a modal price. Modal prices are average market prices for a particular commodity over a two-month period in Madhya Pradesh and two other states where the crop is grown and traded.

  • This scheme relieves the government of the burden of buying the produce from farmers and then selling them in the market at a loss. Also, the government is freed of the handling and transportation charges of the commodity bought at government rates.

  • With a large number of farmers in Rajasthan still waiting for their turn to sell garlic at government purchase rates, the state government is deliberating the issue of enforcing Madhya Pradesh’s price difference model.

  • If the price difference scheme is implemented, the state government’s losses can be reduced and the government would also be relieved from the purchase of garlic

  • Although fixing school fees is the domain of state governments, in the absence of a standard fee policy for unaided schools, there has been a growing clamour for central regulations.

  • India has 350,000 private, unaided schools — 24% of all schools — where 75 million children, or 38% of all students, study. Such schools do not receive any grant from the government and have to generate their own revenue for sustenance.
