Ordinance ‘Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020’, promulgated by the President on Friday, purportedly aims at giving more freedom to farmers and widen their market network outside friendly neighbourhood mandis by abolishing inter-state barriers.
It provides farmers and traders an alternate trade channel with freedom of choice for inter-state and intrastate sale and purchase of their produce outside the physical premises of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) and other notified markets, including deemed.
The list of scheduled farmers’ produce in Punjab is very exhaustive (131 in number) and includes cereals, pulses, edible oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, fodder, poultry, piggery, fishery, dairy and meat. The new ordinance will impact trade and commerce widely across the country by making it more competitive, which has been missing in the wider context under present system.
